50+2 years Italian Design Exhibition Beijing – China
The Italian Design at NAMOC National Art Museum of China
The exhibition retraces approximately 50 years of Italian design by presenting a large selection of items that have been produced by Italian companies over the period. With the help of graphics, videos, and photographs of the interior spaces from the time, the displays tell a story of Italy from the post-war era to the present. Snapshots into scenes from Italian homes illustrate how style and the art of living have evolved over the course of each decade. This goes hand in hand with images from the manufacturing processes that show how a long tradition of craftsmanship and know-how in the making of beautiful things has developed. The aim is to offer different perspectives and interpretations of a complex cultural, economic and social phenomenon known the world over as “Italian Design”. I have created displays that suggest the idea of a stage -where the objects are the actors who over the years have made their appearance, in supporting or starring roles, on the Italian design scene. The backdrop is a book taken from the shelves of the time – opened to illustrate moments in this chapter of the history of culture and Italian society, from the post-war era to the present. The spaces of the Museum are thus remodeled to create a sequence of different spaces, decade by decade, demonstrating the changes in habits, fashions, trends and lifestyles over the last 50 years in Italy.
